 Adam Lambert wows at the Grand

Glambert's got his groove back.

Let's face it, there was a "good-lord-he's-not-going-to-fail-is-he" period for Adam Lambert, after his controversial American Music Awards performance and a slow start for his debut single.

But the glam guy's got momentum back on his side. His follow-up singles have done well, and, lo and behold, his fresh solo tour - which played MGM Grand at Foxwoods on Thursday - resurrects the over-the-top but totally fun Lambert that "Idol" audiences embraced.

Boy, did they embrace him Thursday, too. The fans at the show - from girls to grandmas, with even some of the older women dressed in age-questionable Lambert homages - periodically squealed as if they were at a Justin Bieber concert.

And they were up on their feet for a show that was, in essence, a big ol' dance party. At the start of the concert, Lambert said, "Come on, people, dance with me." He did, in fact, bust a move or two and didn't embarrass himself.

Many of the songs from his CD - particularly "If I Had You," "Music Again" and the Lady Gaga-penned "Fever" - have an insistent beat and sing-along lyrics that work wonders in a concert hall.

But what really gives the tunes their fire is Lambert's elastic, operatic voice. It's so full of character. An acoustic segment really let the focus fall solely on his voice, giving an emotional reading to "Whataya Want From Me."

Vocal prowess is all well and good, but Lambert is about style and flash, too, so we know what you're thinking: What did the heck did he wear, and did he do anything truly outrageous?

Well, the opening ensemble was by far the most flamboyant. He sported a shiny purple jacket with super-long fringe on the sleeves and piles of fur on the shoulders, and he wore a towering top hat decorated with a scarlet "A" and plumage. His other costume changes united black and glitter in all possible combinations.

As for outrageousness, no, there really wasn't any (read: no AMA-style kisses of boys in the band).

The visuals were relatively modest - some videos flashing on a screen, some laser lights, dancers materializing periodically and looking like Cirque du Soleil refugees.

Lambert broke out two of his signature "Idol" covers for the encore, but, in typical Lambert fashion, changed them up. He infused "Mad World" with more verve than his haunting TV performance, and he morphed "Whole Lotta Love" into a slow jam, which, oddly enough, worked. It didn't hurt that he ended "Love" by wailing some of his Freddy-Mercury-esque high notes.

The concert was surprisingly short, only running an hour and five minutes. Granted, Lambert has only released one album, but, seriously, break out some more covers or talk to the audience more.

The evening was padded out to its three-hour length with two opening acts and lengthy breaks between. Fellow "Idol" alum Allison Iraheta was all youthful enthusiasm, attacking every song, but she could use a little more modulation in her performance. But that voice! Smoky and sensational.

The other opener, Orianthi, somehow sings like Taylor Swift and plays guitar like Slash. Go figure.
